Super stach squeed8/30/2023 The term squeezing thus refers to a reduced quantum uncertainty. Has a quantum uncertainty smaller than that of a coherent state. In quantum physics, light is in a squeezed state, if its electric field strength Ԑ for some phases Squeezed light is used to reduce the photon counting noise (shot noise) in optical high-precision measurements, most notably in laser interferometers. Today they run wildly from ‘plumb-colored’ PSPs in good condition for $600 to minty P7M13s that start at the $2K mark. There are basically two main ways to squeeze light:ĪM, when you have an amplitude (you modify the amplitude) squeezed light, you have light with an intensity noise below the shot noise levelįM, you do frequency doubling, that is you have two photons incoming into the crystal and you have one photon with doubled frequency coming out All of these factors combined make the guns extremely collectable both as shooters and as curiosity pieces. Their sleek, clean lines have long set the P7 aside as something of a gentleman’s gun. These guns are stunningly accurate, solid, utterly reliable, and have an overall interesting design. In law enforcement and military sales, the gun consistently lost sales to cheaper Glocks, Berettas, and S&W guns that were also less complicated to operate. For occasional shooters who had cut their teeth on more conventional designs, the HKP7 was often too much to get used to. With the locked barrel and low bore axis, they heated up very fast in extended shooting and just were not enjoyable after a box or two of rounds, keeping plinkers and match shooters away. These guns, with their unique squeeze-cocking lever, require a good bit of range time (and a proper grip) to cock and keep cocked. It would seem that though the gun was close to mechanically perfect it’s always been a hard sell. 40 S&W offering (the P7M10) and a double-stack 9mm (P7M13) to try to turn this around sales but ultimately failed. The NJSP was the largest LE customer in the US and the gun never really caught on with cops in the states.Ĭommercial sales, largely due to the gun’s high cost when compared to other offerings, were steady but never breathtaking. Sold more than 3,000 of the guns to the New Jersey State Police who carried them for twenty years (replaced by the SIG P228 in 2003). Who really wants to buy the world’s most expensive gun? Notably however, several German counter-terrorist teams (with larger budgets) adopted the P7 as did the German Army Special forces (KSK Kommando Spezialkräfte).ĭivided reception aside, HK never really marketed the gun right. The gun went into production first in 1979 and, while well received by law enforcement in West Germany, more departments there tended to go for the Sig-Sauer P225/P6 series than either the more expensive Walther P5 or the HKP7. Also similar to the Glock, but predating that Austrian gun by half dozen years, the P7 was striker fired. A very low bore axis (similar to a Glock) translates to super mild recoil especially when coupled with the 9mm cartridge and an all-steel frame. Weighing in at 27.7-ounces with a polygonal rifled 4.1 -inch barrel, the overall length of the pistol was just 6.1-inches. This means fewer moving parts, less to break, greater functionality, and impressive reliability. Be forced back by the excess pressure created when the round fires and means there is no need for an extractor-the spent case is chucked with a good bit of force behind it, well clear of the ejection port.

Andy slavitt son covid8/30/2023 We probably will never run out of ventilators again. I’m quite sure we can get the literal things right. And along with that, we need a domestic drug supply manufacturing capacity so we can control some of the critical medications and not have to rely on overseas trade. But depending upon how something spreads, it could be other things. For this particular crisis, we know that looks like masks and shields. We also need the physical infrastructure, a cache of ready supplies, probably in regional hubs that are continually maintained. We need to be able to do very quick tracing and testing and have that infrastructure up and ready to go. Here we are, $4 or $5 trillion later, and $100 billion seems like a dream. On the three biggest things we can do to prepare for the next pandemic: I gave a speech at School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota in December-little did I know how close we were coming to a pandemic-and I said that the biggest problem in public health is there is no effective public health lobby and no one had put together a case for $100 billion of investment in the country’s public health infrastructure. Earlier this week, he summed up what seems like his guiding principle in a single tweet: “Crises are shorter when governments are better.” “Crises are shorter when governments are better.” His prolific Twitter feed is required coronavirus reading-in voicey threads, he contextualizes the torrent of overwhelming pandemic news. His podcast, “ In the Bubble,” tackles vaccine science, offers advice on confronting mask deniers, and offers solutions to the emerging hunger crisis as the economy falters. Since then, he’s emerged as an authority on both the medical and political dimensions of COVID-19. In March, he predicted the shortage of hospital beds and ventilators. Slavitt grasped the seriousness of the coronavirus back in February, when he urged the White House to ramp up preparations-and he wasn’t shy about criticizing what he saw as a woefully inadequate response. United States of Care, the nonprofit he helped build in the years since, aims to improve access to health care for all Americans. After decades of leadership in health care companies, he served under President Obama as the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where he was instrumental in implementing the Affordable Care Act. So how do we fix what COVID has shown was broken? In this Mother Jones series, we’re asking experts from a wide range of disciplines one question: What are the most important steps we can take to make sure we’re better prepared next time?Īndy Slavitt knows the ins and outs of public health in America. Infectious disease experts agree that it’s only a matter of time before the next pandemic, and that could be even more deadly. Despite repeated warnings from infectious disease experts, we lacked essential beds, equipment, and medication public health advice was confusing, and our leadership offered no clear direction while sidelining credible health professionals and institutions. Check out our most recent coverage of the coronavirus crisis, and subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter.Īs the world grapples with the devastation of the coronavirus, one thing is clear: The United States simply wasn’t prepared. The coronavirus is a rapidly developing news story, so some of the content in this article might be out of date.
